In the Ramayana there is a reference to Maha Pathivrathas.
It occurs in Sundara Kanda [sarga 24] portion.Matha Sita refers to the pathivrathas by listing their names even. They are Suvarchala [Surya]Shachi[Shakram],Arundhathi[Vasishtam]Rohini[Shasinam],Lopamudhra [Agasthyam]Sukanya[Chyavanam]Savithri[Sathyavantham]Srimathi[Kapilam]
Madhayanthi[Sowdhasam]Kesini[Sagaram]Dhamayanthi[Nalamor Naishadham]
Seetha says that she is like them and is devoted only to Sri Ramam,Ikshavulu Varam.
Mandodhari is also reckoned as a Pthivratha,so also Thara [Vali],Ahalya[Gowthamar]and Dhrowpathi.
Madhayanthi name is derived from Madhayanthika referring to Mehandhi or Henna or Marudhani [in Tamil].
This is a great herbal medicine too.
